For three years, the staff at Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow Union Free School District has collected funds and purchased everything from backpacks to pencils for students whose families simply cannot meet the rising costs of school supplies. Collecting school supplies for students in need has become a tradition at Woodland. Through the fundraising efforts of school librarian Leslie Rausch, foreign language teacher Patricia Johnson, and one very special eighth grader, Anusha Syed, this generous middle school has raised nearly $3,000 in school supplies for their school store. Nearly 100 students will be supplied with backpacks, notebooks, crayons, pens, glue, rulers, protractors, loose-leaf paper, graph paper, folders, and a feeling of self-worth and positive self-esteem. Not only has this effort provided the necessary school supplies to many students, but it also encouraged Anusha to do her own fundraising this past summer. She raised $2,500 through door-to-door donations, and with the help of family and friends, procured many needed items for the school store. To commemorate this occasion, Anusha was joined by her family, teachers, and Principal James Lethbridge, and was recognized for her efforts by Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray and Town Councilman Gary Hudes.
