East Meadow High School students provided a series of memorable musical performances during their winter concert on Dec. 16. The program drew praise from parents, faculty and administrators and featured a variety of musical tunes performed by the ninth-grade band, symphonic orchestra, mixed chorus and chamber orchestra. The ninth-grade band, directed by Joel Levy, started the night with a powerful musical set which included “The Spirit of 76” by Clare Grundman and “Seagate Overture” by James Swearingen. The symphonic orchestra, directed by Lisa McElraevy and accompanied by concertmaster James Gratta, performed several pieces during the show, including festive tunes such as Chip Davis’s “Deck the Halls” and Peter Tchaikovsky’s “A Mad Russian’s Christmas.” Directed by Caitlin Hale and accompanied by Rachel Fogel, the mixed chorus performed poignant versions of Eric Whitacre’s “The Seal Lullaby” and Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes.” The chamber orchestra, directed by Michael Cascardi and accompanied by concertmaster Allyson Arias, concluded the evening with classical numbers, including J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 and “Hallelujah” from George Handel’s “Messiah,” which was performed with the mixed chorus.
