The story that was inspired by the popular singer Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the Army in 1957, was brought to life by McVey Elementary School students. The all-American teenage musical comedy “Bye Bye Birdie” was performed in a one-night performance on February 7, 2013. This production gave the audience a retro look at an era when an appearance on Ed Sullivan’s television show was the true testament of fame. This classic show, directed by math teacher Charles Angeli, has been a mainstay of school theatre groups for nearly 50 years. It tells the story of naive teenager Kim MacAfee and how her life is turned upside down when she is chosen to bid farewell to newly drafted pop megastar Conrad Birdie. Her life and the lives of everyone around her get caught up in a media circus that descends upon them with hilarious results. The score of familiar songs including “Put on a Happy Face” and “Kids” thrilled audience members and had them singing along in their seats. Bravo!
