Parkway Elementary School recently hosted its annual literacy night at the Barnes & Noble store on Old Country Road in Carle Place as part of its Parents as Reading Partners program. The event was sponsored by the school’s PTA.
At the event, school administrators and faculty held story time gatherings with students. Student-musicians also performed musical pieces for fellow students, faculty and parents in attendance. Students made a commitment to read as often as possible, and enjoyed exploring a variety of books at the event.

Breakfast of champions
Twenty-two East Meadow High School students were recently recognized for their exemplary character and conduct at the school’s Breakfast of Champions ceremony.
Breakfast of Champions is a student recognition program designed to highlight students who consistently make positive contributions to the school’s community. Faculty and staff nominated students based on a variety of positive qualities, including generosity toward others, respect for peers and faculty, personal integrity and hard work. Students received recognition awards from faculty and staff at the ceremony.

Town recognizes student’s artwork
Bowling Green Elementary School fourth-grader Yeonwoo Lee was recently named a winner in the Town of Hempstead’s 2015 Recycle Poster Contest.
Her winning work of art will be prominently displayed on Town of Hempstead Department of Sanitation garbage and recycling trucks on a rotating basis. The contest was held to promote the importance of preserving and protecting the environment.
The Bowling Green Elementary School administration and staff congratulate Yeonwoo on her fine achievement.

Beauty and the Beast
The East Meadow High School Theatre Guild and Music Department recently captivated audiences with performances of the musical production “Beauty and the Beast,” directed by band teacher Christopher Hale. “Beauty and the Beast” tells the tale of a young prince who was cast under a spell, changing him into a hideous beast. Loving another and earning their love in return is the only way to break this curse. Belle is a beautiful and headstrong young woman who takes the place of her imprisoned father in the Beast’s enchanted castle. During her time with the Beast, she teaches him to be gentle and kind. The two fall in love, breaking the spell and transforming the Beast back into a prince.
The student cast impressed the audience with their exceptional performances, and the student orchestra, conducted by Joel Levy, provided harmonious musical accompaniment. The production was met with rave reviews from students, parents and community members.

EMHS Spring Concert
East Meadow High School students provided an evening of outstanding musical performances with their spring concert on April 29.
The program included pieces by the men’s chorus, ninth-grade concert band, women’s chorus and chamber orchestra, all of which were well-received by those in attendance.

Multicultural show unites Clarke HS
W.T. Clarke High School students showcased their various talents during the school’s annual Multicultural Show on April 29.
The event, attended by parents, faculty, administrators and community residents, featured a number of performances, including various cultural dances, Italian, Spanish and French songs and a Japanese martial arts demonstration.
The school’s Multicultural Club hosts the annual show in an effort to promote tolerance and acceptance of diverse cultures. The tradition allows students to celebrate their own cultural heritages as well as those of their peers.

Health and nutrition at Barnum Woods
Nassau University Medical Center interns visited first- and second-grade students at Barnum Woods Elementary School on April 29 to host interactive workshops on health, safety and nutrition.
The interns, who are studying to become pediatricians, discussed important safety tips with students on how to protect their bodies. Such tips included wearing a helmet when riding a bike and wearing a seatbelt when in a car. They also spoke about healthy eating habits; emphasizing students should eat more fruits and vegetables and avoid unhealthy foods and beverages such as soda and candy.
To stay healthy, the interns spoke with students about the importance of exercise, whether jogging, running or participating in sports activities with friends. Students enjoyed the interactive workshops and learned a wealth of knowledge about proper health and wellness.

High Schools Ranked High by U.S. News and World Report
U.S. News & World Report has released its annual ranking of the country’s high schools, which assesses schools on how well they serve all students and how successfully the schools are educating students across a variety of measurable academic outcomes. East Meadow High School ranked #157 out of more than 1,000 high schools reviewed in New York State, and ranked #1,663 nationwide. W.T. Clarke High School ranked #102 in New York State, and ranked #960 nationwide. As a result, both schools have received Silver Medal status from the publication.
Rankings are based on the latest data available to the College Board from the 2012-13 school year. Both East Meadow High School and W.T. Clarke High School ranked above the NYS average in terms of college readiness and proficiency in Math and English.
East Meadow High School has a 34 percent participation rate in AP examinations with 79 percent of students scoring a 3 or higher on their exams. W.T. Clarke High School has a 48 percent participation rate in AP examinations and also has 79 percent of students scoring a 3 or higher on exams. A grade of 3 or higher on an AP exam indicates that the student is achieving at or above college level. “Our East Meadow Board of Education, central administration, and principals are proud to have our schools recognized as being among the best high schools in the state and nation by U.S. News & World Report,” said Superintendent of Schools Louis R. DeAngelo. “I commend our high school building principals and faculties on their commitment to maintaining a culture and tradition of academic excellence in our high schools, and on their preparation of our students for college and career readiness.”

Clarke HS teams compete in JANY Business Plan Contest
Five business teams at W.T. Clarke High School competed in the school round of the Junior Achievement of New York Business Plan Competition on May 8.
Now in its eighth year, the Business Plan Competition, JANY’s flagship, youth, entrepreneurship education program, provides New York City and Long Island students the opportunity to pitch ideas for new business ventures in an exciting competition format. Prominent members of the New York City and Long Island business communities serve as judges. This year, students will conceive, research, develop and competitively pitch ideas for products or services which can transform the travel and tourism industry. The top three winning teams will walk away with cash prizes valued up to nearly $20,000.
At W.T. Clarke High School’s school round, Team PinPoint, consisting of students Steven Davidson, Christina Mendoza, Karen Papazian and Binita Shah, earned first place among strong competition. Their business plan is centered on PinPoint, an inconspicuous device with built-in nanotechnology which can be placed on commonly lost items such as keys, glasses, laptops and pets, and can track items with the push of a button on its mobile application. Students explained that on PinPoint's app, customers could view where all of their various PinPoints are located.
PinPoint is the smallest device on the market and is completely customizable to camouflage with all belongings.
The W.T. Clarke High School administration congratulates PinPoint, as well as the following teams who also earned honors and participated in the competition:

Team PinPoint will now move onto the semifinal round of the competition which will take place on May 19 at Baruch College.
“I would like to take the opportunity to thank our central administration as well as W.T. Clarke High School administration for their ongoing support of our business students,” said W.T. Clarke High School business teacher and adviser Joseph Pavia. “We receive great support from many people and this is why we’re so successful. Our students are creative, hard-working and passionate, and this is a wonderful opportunity to provide them with hands-on, real-world learning experiences in our district.”

An evening of music at Clarke MS
An enthusiastic audience attended the first part of W.T. Clarke Middle School’s spring concert on May 11.
Parents, faculty and administrators enjoyed musical numbers performed by the jazz ensemble, chamber orchestra, chamber singers, sixth-grade orchestra, eighth-grade chorus and eighth-grade band. The exceptional performances made for a special evening for the school community.

Woodland MS showcases musical talent
Woodland Middle School eighth-graders impressed family, faculty and administrators with their musical talent during the school’s eighth-grade spring concert on May 13.
The program featured a number of musical performances by the jazz ensemble, eighth-grade orchestra, eighth-grade chorus and eighth-grade concert band.

East Meadow Budget Passes, Proposition #2 Also Approved
Thank you to all residents who participated in the 2015-16 budget vote and trustee election. The budget passed by a vote 4,619 to 1,350, representing a 77.38% “yes” vote.
Proposition #2 (addition of full-day kindergarten) also passed by a vote of 4,019 to 2,048, representing a 66.24% “yes” vote.
In addition, Brian O’Flaherty and Melissa Tell were elected to the Board of Education. The vote totals for the Board race were as follows:

Walter Skinner: 2,576
Melissa Tell: 2,608

Students honored for music and art
During a recent end-of-year awards ceremony, hundreds of elementary and secondary students in the district were honored for excellence in music and art.
The evening began with welcoming remarks from Superintendent of Schools Louis R. DeAngelo, who highlighted the students’ many achievements over the course of the school year. Selected students from each of the district’s nine schools were bestowed with humanitarian awards for their strong character, leadership, benevolence and good will throughout the school year.
Afterward, students who excelled in the arts and music were honored. A total of 293 music and art awards were presented to students. As their names were called in their respective categories, the students lined up on the risers and were officially recognized.
Music highlights included:
• Eleven student-musicians were selected as All State musicians for the New York State School Music Association Winter Conference in Rochester, New York. One student was named an alternate. • Twenty-nine student-musicians were selected to perform in the Long Island String Festival Association festivals. • A total of 153 student-musicians attended the Nassau Music Educators Association All-County Festival at LIU Post.• Two student-musicians performed with the National Association for Music Education’s All-National Symphonic Orchestra at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee.• Four student-musicians were selected to attend the prestigious National Association for Music Education All-Eastern Division Conference in Providence, Rhode Island.
Art highlights included:
• Sixty-six student-artists participated in the Art Supervisors Association All-County Art Exhibition. • Twelve student-artists were selected to participate in the Long Island Art Teachers Association Art in Heart Exhibition.• Thirteen student-artists participated in the Olympics of the Visual Arts.• The works of two student-artists were displayed in the New York State Art Teachers Association Legislative Student Art Exhibit.

Clarke HS spring concert dazzles
Students at W.T. Clarke High School showcased their musical abilities during the first part of the school’s spring concert on May 18. The program featured performances by the jazz ensemble I, jazz ensemble II, jazz choir, chamber orchestra and symphonic orchestra. The evening of student talent and music was well-received by those in attendance.

Bowling Green hosts wax museum
Bowling Green Elementary School second grade students recently engaged in a unit of study on famous people.
As part of the unit of study, students completed a research project on famous individuals such as Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Amelia Earhart. As part of a culminating activity, the second graders created a “wax museum,” where they dressed up in costume to resemble the person they researched and presented speeches providing important facts about each famous individual.
The project enabled the students to learn valuable historical knowledge about famous individuals and their various contributions to the world.
