Students at Barnum Woods Elementary School learned about the heart and the body’s blood flow through a unique lesson that was part of a three-week study about heart health and nutrition. Under the direction of physical education teacher Debbie Barbato and Donald Whearty, students rotated through an obstacle course resembling the cardiovascular system. They performed tasks at stations that represented each part of the heart. The students entered a parachute, symbolizing the body’s lungs. They then “traveled” to the pulmonary vein, left ventricle, right atrium and finally, the pulmonary artery, all while performing a series of cardiovascular exercises. Each station throughout the course was labeled with a note to remind the students of the station’s, or system’s function.
Mr. Whearty explained, “By simulating the heart through the obstacle course, the students were able to gain a clear understanding about how blood travels through our body.”
